Guillaume Erard (6th dan) sits down with @BrunoGonzalezAikido (6th dan) at Le Cercle Tissier dojo in Paris for a chat about his journey through Aikido.
Bruno Gonzalez is known for his precise, fluid, and deeply reflective approach to the art. He began practicing Aikido in Bordeaux at age 15 and later moved to Paris to train intensively under Christian Tissier at the renowned Cercle Tissier dojo, where he eventually became a leading instructor. Gonzalez teaches internationally, conducting seminars across Europe and beyond, and has also led national stages for the French Aikido federation (FFAAA).
00:16 I’d really like to know how you got into Aikido in particular—or maybe into martial arts before that?
01:28 At 15, you already had this idea of concentration, which is rather unusual for someone that age, perhaps?
02:05 Before moving to Paris, had you already met Christian Tissier?
02:56 How did you find your place there?
03:43 What was your relationship with the previous generation—Christian’s generation?
03:50 Was there a sense of emulation or rivalry?
03:53 Were there things that you all shared or that influenced you?
04:57 You didn’t start Aikido at the Cercle (Tissier)?
05:09 What was your feeling when you arrived there for the first time?
06:18 Was there a sense of cohesion within the Cercle itself?
06:24 Were there people, unlike you, who created a sort of group or circle of relationships, or was it more like—everyone practiced and then went straight home afterward?
07:36 Of course, I imagine Christian was your main influence, but were there other people who particularly marked or shaped you in certain aspects?
08:34 For those people, was there—if not a formal curriculum—perhaps private lessons or something like that?
11:40 For you—or for Christian—does a certain form lend itself particularly well to demonstration?
12:54 Is there a particular event that stands out in your memory, for one reason or another?
14:32 If we can now talk about teaching—at what point did you start giving classes?
15:16 Was it he (Christian) who asked you to start teaching?
15:26 And did that change anything for you in your own practice?
17:27 Did you try to adapt your pedagogy to each person’s body, abilities, and even personality?
20:20 For you, does that really affect the way we move—the way we think about and experience our own movement?
24:07 Is that a terminology you personally use?
28:59 Is that something you try to apply in your everyday life—beyond the mat?
