Sculpture is the art of creating three-dimensional forms. Unlike painting or drawing, which create the illusion of depth, sculptures are physical objects that occupy space.
Artists use a variety of techniques to create them. Carving is a subtractive method, where material is removed from a larger block, like with stone or wood. Modeling is an additive method, where a soft material like clay is built up and shaped. Casting involves pouring a liquid material into a mold.
Sculptures can be freestanding, visible from all sides, or a relief, attached to a background.
From ancient statues of gods to modern abstract works, sculptures have always been a powerful way for artists to express ideas, emotions, and stories in a tangible form.
