Subramaniyan Karuppaiya (born 25 May 1939[1]), known by his stage name Goundamani,[2] is an Indian actor and comedian who works in Tamil cinema.[3] He is known for his comic duo partnership in Tamil films with fellow actor Senthil. The pair dominated the Tamil industry as comedians in the 1980s and 90s.[4]

He was called Goundamani as a misconception by actor/director K. Bhagyaraj which he himself stated in an interview and the pseudonym stuck with him forever.[5][2] He has the ability to give counter dialogues on the spot and off the script on stage and during shooting.[6] He was at his peak of his career as a comedian in Tamil cinema for nearly 40 years.[7] Despite his popularity, Goundamani is known for being a social recluse.[8] Goundamani is also popularly known as the king of comedy in Tamil cinema.

Early life
Goundamani was born as Subramaniyan on 25 May 1939 in Vallakundapuram, a village near Udumalaipettai in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India.[2] His father is Karuppaiya and his mother is Annammal. He married Shanthi in 1963 and has 2 daughters.[9][10]

Career
On having interest in acting, he went to Chennai and initially started acting in theatre dramas and then entered into the Tamil film industry (Kollywood) due to his strong theatrical background.[2]

He made his film acting debut in Server Sundaram where he featured in a minor and uncredited role as a driver. He made his full-fledged debut in 1977 film 16 Vayathinile where he played the role of Rajinikanth's sidekick. His role in the 1977 P. Bharathiraja directorial was also Goundamani's first credited role in his film career.
Senthil (born 23 March 1951) is an Indian comedy actor who works in Tamil cinema.[3][4] He is famous for his comedian roles along with fellow actor Goundamani. The pair dominated the Tamil industry as comedians in the 1980s and 90s.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

Personal life
Senthil was born on 23 March 1951 in a small village near Mudukulathur in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu. He married Kalaiselvi on 14 May 1984.[12] They have two sons and two granddaughters.[citation needed]

Career
As actor
He ran away from his village at the age of 13 due to his father's scoldings.[13] He first worked in an oil mart, then in a private wine shop as a waiter and then ended up in drama where he started developing his skills.[14]

He made his debut with Oru Koyil Iru Dheepangal (1979) though officially his first film was Ithikkara Pakki, which was released in 1980.[15][16] He slowly entered the Tamil film industry in small characters and finally landed a good role in the film Malaiyoor Mambattiyan. He has acted in many popular films with several of the leading actors and comedians in the south Indian cine industry. He usually appears in films with Goundamani in a slapstick double act. They formed a comic pair in many Tamil films.[17][5]

In 2019, Senthil has started acting in Tamil tele-serials making his debut with Sun TV's Rasathi.[18]

Politics
Initially campaigning for AIADMK, Senthil is currently campaigning for AMMK party.[19][20] Former minister Gokula Indira was replaced in the post of organising secretary by Senthil, appointed by T. T. V. Dhinakaran in AIADMK in 2017.[21] Later, he joined TTV Dinakaran's Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam political party. In September 2019, Senthil, Kathirkamu, Raja Manickam, Devadas and Henry Thomas were announced as the five organisation secretaries of AMMK party.[22] He joined Bharatiya Janata Party, just before the 2021 T
