How to make a fairy castle out of clay! The castle starts as a cylinder thrown on the pottery wheel. Once it dries and is firm enough to handle, I cut out windows, the tower, and the gateway. I then line the gateway with “stones” and carve texture for the castle walls. Now the piece is ready to dry and have its first kiln firing (a lower temperature firing called the bisque firing which drives out moisture and hardens the clay). Now I glaze the castle and fire the piece again. This higher temperature kiln firing melts the glaze and vitrifies the clay. Glaze becomes a coating of glass on pottery, both sealing the clay and giving a decorative look.
In my home I have a collection of fairy houses I’ve created, all different, and of course a castle - I love to put lights in them and create a little twinkling village. #fairyhouse #fairycore #potterywheel #ceramicsculpture #artsandcrafts
